IBA Course: 8003 Introduction to Business Appraisal

Program Focus

This course is intended to provide a hands-on learning experience at the basic level. The objectives of this workshop are twofold:

  • To provide an educational tool for those seeking an introduction to the basics of business appraisal/valuation; and
  • To provide fundamental information, reference materials, and direction for the basic principles of business appraisal/valuation.

What You Will Learn

At the completion of this course attendees will:

  • Be aware of the major business valuation professional organizations, IBA and USPAP standards, and basic valuation principles
  • Be familiar with the steps in the business appraisal/valuation assignment
  • Understand the basic theory of the income, asset, and market approaches
  • Be acquainted with the sources of information used to support the appraisal/valuation methods
  • Understand the conceptual basis of discounts and premiums
  • Have a basic understanding of the organization and content of a business appraisal/valuation report

Daily Schedule

Day one is designed to provide an understanding of professional standards, ethics, revenue rulings, and an overview of appraisal/valuation approaches, methods and valuation procedures.

Day two covers simple marketing strategies for a business appraisal/valuation practice, steps in the valuation assignment, spreading the financial data and a brief overview of how word processing and spreadsheets are used within the valuation process.

The last three days of the course are designed to educate students on the application of the income, asset, and market approaches and methods, applicable to a 100% ownership interest.

Who Should Attend

This course is geared towards individuals who are entering the business appraisal/valuation profession. Students should have a basic understanding of accounting and finance.

Dennis Bingham, MCBA, BVAL

Dennis Bingham is President of Corporate Appraisal, Inc. an Eden Prairie, Minnesota based valuation firm providing business valuations for both operating and holding companies, including controlling and partial interests. 

Dennis has been a speaker at the National Conference of the IBA and has been published in the Journal of Business Appraisal Practice, and Family Law.  He has served as an instructor for various IBA seminars and as an ad hoc professor at the University of St. Thomas.

KC Conrad, CBA, CMEA, ASA

KC Conrad is a principal in American Business Appraisers, LLC of Phoenix, Arizona, a firm specializing in business valuation, machinery & equipment appraising and business counseling support services. KC has served as an expert witness in litigation matters, has had numerous articles published and has written courses relating to business valuation issues. He is a course instructor for the Institute of Business Appraisers, NEBB Institute and Arizona Business Brokers Association.
